Spring Hike

We have had a long winter. Just last Thursday there were snow flurries in the air. But today spring sprung like a very springy thingy. So I took my two boys and my very lovely wife, great with child and headed for the woods.

The Vértes Hills are right to the south of where we live. They are not very tall but they are filled with exposed rock and downy oak trees.
Our spectacular 3.5 km hike (roughly 2 miles) started with a lot of up.

Benjamin sometimes needed a little help . . .
and sometimes a lot.
But the view from the top was worth it. This hazy picture doesn't do it justice.
Along the way to the top, we had time to climb trees . . .
throw leaves . . .
check out the world's littlest cave (no bats) . . .
and admire the spring forest flowers.
The way down was more treacherous due to a missed turn. It wasn't a problem for Oliver, a real climber, nor Benjamin, whose hand I held firmly . . .
but for Melinda and her 10 pound belly, it proved a bit much. Better safe than sorry.
Here's a farewell picture from high above Csákvár, where after our descent we looked for an ice cream store with ice cream. We didn't find one and had to settle for chocolate cake. Oh well.

It was a fantastic day and reminded us how much we've missed being out of doors. It also reminded us that we still like each other!

Update/Hírek

Lots of things have happened since the last post. We have a really busy two weeks behind us. Here is a summary:

1. Benjamin had minor surgery a week ago. In case you are wondering, it is a type that only boys can have. :) They don't do that stuff "over here" right after birth, so for various reasons we had it done now. Everything went well and he is doing great most of the time - except for some discomfort. I am so glad that I could be by his side at the hospital, but I was physically and emotionally exhausted... A great thank you to the doctors and nurses who - despite the fact that their salaries are shamefully low here - were very professional and kind.

2. We had an outreach team come from a bible school in Colorado. They went to teach English classes at schools, held English clubs, ministered at church and hung out with the youth of Tatabánya. They did wonderful. :) A personal highlight that I just HAVE TO share was that we took them bowling and my score was the second best! :) Matthew says that somehow my "built in" bowling ball could have helped...

3. We also had a couple visit us from Matthew's parents church. The husband had to do business in the area (imagine that!) and they came to see us. We took them sightseeing to different towns in the area and fed them some good Hungarian food. :) We really enjoyed their company, even more so because we hadn't really had anyone cross the line between our "two worlds" except for family. We hope there is more to come!

Well, these were just some major events. Life otherwise is great, the kids are playing hard, my belly is growing and I can still fit into my classroom! :) Hope in the next posts we can share some pictures and stories as well.

Sok minden történt a legutóbbi bejegyzés óta. Jó kis zsúfolt két hét áll mögöttünk. Íme egy összefoglaló:

Szuperek voltak.

Hát ezek voltak a legjelentősebb események.

In memoriam

This won't be a happy post, but I think we need these too... Someone we know sent me this e-mail and it touched me because of my family history as well.

In Memoriam

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in
Europe ended This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated with the German and Russian Peoples looking the other way!

Now, more than ever, because some people are claiming the
Holocaust to be 'a myth,' it's imperative to make sure the world never forgets, because there are others who would like to do it again.

Pass on the torch of knowledge...

Project

A minap a fiúk kitaláltak maguknak egy kis képzőművészeti feladatot. Ment a vágás és a ragasztás ezerrel.

The other day the boys thought out an art project. There was a lot of cutting and gluing going on.
Node mi is volt a feladat? Nézzük csak meg közelebbről.
Now what was the task exactly? Let's take a closer look.

Yes, as you can see, our children cut out the animals from toilet paper and glued them on a piece of paper. Have I told you that our boys are (usually...) easy to please?

The morale of the story is that we fell into the trap of marketing. We bought this toilet paper with the subtitle "kids", which I think is of no better quality than the cheapo kind, but of course it is more expensive (though Matthew disagrees). And also, why would you need different paper for the "kids"? Everyone in the family is using a different brand? Or the kids have a separate bathroom? (I don't know of one Hungarian family that does!)

The second morale is that it was again proven that the kids don't care about expensive toys one bit. Let's just buy them a roll of animal toilet paper for their birthdays! :))

Farsang-Carnival

A few weeks ago Oliver celebrated Carnival (Farsang) with his preschool group. Here is a group picture of him and his friends:

Néhány hete Olivér ovijában megünnepeltük a farsangot. Íme egy csoportkép az óvodásunkról és barátairól.
Benjamin didn't want to dress up this time, but he still had a good time.
Here is a close-up of our kitty cat./Itt egy közeli kép a macsekunkról.

Our little banana/Kis banánkánk

I would like to introduce you to our third child. Here he/she is:
Ezennel szeretném nektek bemutatni harmadik gyermekünket. Íme:

There is a website that you can get weekly pregnancy and baby updates from. One of the features they have is a week-by-week baby developmental page, on which they demonstrate how big your baby is compared to a vegetable and a quarter. This week our little munchkin is as big as a banana! :) I think this is a great visual tool especially for the two big brothers who keep asking how big our baby is. You can check out the rest of the veggies here.

A többi zöldséget is megtekinthetitek itt.

Tél/Winter

Ezzel a bejegyzéssel szeretnénk hivatalosan búcsút mondani a télnek! :) Mindenki, minket is beleértve, betegeskedett. Na szóval értitek. Várjuk a TAVASZT!!! :))

With this post we would like to officially say good-bye to winter! It's been very nice to have you, thank you, but let spring come now!!! Hungary got no snow while we were away, but after we came back, boy, did it come! This is actually a nice thing, as our dusty, muddy back yard was covered and was clean enough for the kids to play in. However, it's been cold and dark. I am tired of having to put 20 layers on the kids before we go anywhere and dragging them in the snow/slush/mud (or pushing the stroller in the snow - way too much fun especially when you are pregnant! :) We, and everyone else around as, have been sick. Anyway, you get my point. We are ready for SPRING!!! :))

Node nézzünk meg pár klassz dolgot, amit a hóban/hóból csináltunk.
Anyway, these are some fun things that we did in/with the snow.

Első hóember-építési kísérlet. Ezt a munkálatot én vezettem, össze is dőlt pár óra múlva...
First attempt at building a snowman. I led the construction, which collapsed in a few hours...
A második kísérlet már szakértő atyai irányítással zajlott. A hóember vázát vasrudak (!) alkották. :)
The second project was headed up by fatherly expertise. The snowman is supported by iron rods (!) inside. It will stand there till spring, for sure! :)
Íme egy közeli kép a hómanuszról.
Here is a close-up of the snow guy.
This is a snow fort that the boys built - needless to say - with their father. Cool, isn't it?

The best part is that you can actually go inside!
Kukucs!/Peekaboo!

Traveling with kids

I know this is a bit late. We made the trip from Indiana back to Tatabanya almost four weeks ago. But for what it's worth.
At O'Hare right beyond the security check point in terminal 2 is this great play area designed by the Chicago Children's Museum. It included not only this plane but an air traffic control tower. Oliver and Benjamin ran around, loaded the cargo, talked to each other on the phone system connecting the plane and tower and peddled the stationary bike causing the helicopter's propeller to spin. If only every airport had such a cool place for kids to pass the time.
The view from the play area itself was quite rewarding. We saw several planes loaded and unloaded. Obviously airports are fun places for kids.

Jet Lag

It has been a full week since we arrived in Hungary; one week minus 5 hours, to be exact. That should've been plenty of time to overcome jet lag. But alas, I am still awake and alert. It's 4 am.

For those of you who may not have experienced jet lag before and for the entertainment of you who have, I thought I'd let you know what not to do to get over it.

During the last week, I've had a couple early mornings and even more late evenings. To be fair, I have also had several late mornings and early evenings, not always coinciding with those early mornings and late evenings. I stayed up to watch the Super Bowl live (12:30 am till 4:30 am). I have even taken a couple of naps during the day, which is the trespass of all jet lag trespasses. To top it all off, I've spent almost no time outside due to the constant cloud cover.

I better go to bed. I have to get up in 3 hours!

3

:) Nagy izgalommal várjuk a kis jövevényt! :)

Most is valami hasonlót szeretnénk csinálni.

We would like to make the happy announcement for those who haven't heard yet that in the middle of July the number of our children will increase to three! We are very excited about this new addition! The boys were the first ones to hear the news and they are very happy. Both would like a little girl and Oliver gave the reason too: he already has a little brother, now it's time for a little sister! Makes sense, right? :)

No, we are not finding out the gender during pregnancy this time either. This drives a few of our friends crazy (though that is not why we are doing it this way, believe us!), moreover, a friend "accused us" of finding it out for ourselves and just keeping it a secret from her! :) For this reason we, again, need a little help. Remember the "Name the baby" contest before Benjamin was born? Well, we would like to do something similar this time. Since we are bilingual, don't know the gender of the baby, and give first and middle names, by July we need to come up with 4 names in total. I think we already have the middle names and Matthew says we also have 2 girl and 1 boy names picked out, but I am not so sure about those. I haven't fallen in love with any of them, which is a strong prerequisite...

So do some brainstorming and write to us! The best would be here on the blog, so others can see it to, but if you are shy, you can e-mail us or send us an anonymous letter (no chance for rewards in the latter case I am afraid :).

And why do you want to win the contest? Because the person who sends us the best name(s) will be rewarded with a Hungarian delicacy AND an autographed drawing from Oliver! Don't tell me these are not worth a little brainstorming! :) We are looking forward to receiving your ideas!
