Men at work/Munkálatok 2

As the second part of our series, I would like to introduce you to two other men at work. Although they are still minors, their heartless mother forces them to do housework. The other day I asked them to do a little vacuuming while I collect the dry clothes. Since Oliver hasn't been so fond of the aforementioned chore, he initiated that we trade. I told him fine, I am flexible! They have been so much fun together recently that they made this otherwise dull activity into a game. Here are some pictures:

Éjszakára is. :))

Before anyone thinks that my children are perfect, let me quickly claim firsthand that no, they are not! Praise God! There is oftentimes whining about "not wanting to" to a chore, but I usually cut these short saying that many times I am not "wanting to" either and would rather read in an armchair than cook, clean and do laundry (especially these days! :). I don't want them to grow up to be irresponsible like many adults are unfortunately, or to have their wives slave around, while they criticize them from their lazy-boys...

Well, this is my two cents about this issue. I am often reminded of one of my favorite sayings about motherhood: "Changing the world - one diaper at a time." Many times it is hard. Tiring. Frustrating. (Do I hear anyone say 'amen' or am I the only one feeling this way??) But God called me to do this. It is like a spiritual investment. Small steps hopefully amounting to giant leaps (and
of course I am not speaking only about doing chores any more!!!)

By the way, I have to add that the saying is not completely right for us, as Benjamin has become a big boy as well - for the night, too. So I can proudly announce that our house is a diaper-free zone - for around 7 more weeks!!! :))

Men at work/Munkálatok 1

A minap munkálatokat végeztek a házunkkal szemben.

The other day there were some men doing construction work right across from our house. The boys were of course very interested, and I recorded the events like a real paparazzo (paparazza?) from behind the curtain. And why exactly did I do that? Well, I am simply fascinated by how things get done in Hungary: you need 9 people to complete this 15-minute job.

Ezer bocsánat, helyesbítek: 10 emberre volt szükség. Ez a szaki éppen most fejezte be a cigarettaszünetét.
Oops, sorry, I need to make a correction: they actually needed 10 people. This guy just finished his cigarette break.

Íme, a befejezett mű! Bámulatos, nem? :)
Voila, the finished work! Impressive, isn't it? :)

Santa Jason's Visit

So our Pastor from Fort Wayne, IN spent a week with us a while back. It was great to have him come and teach four times at our church retreat. It was also a real blessing for us to show him around our world here. Not only did he get to know our Tatabánya church, but he met other significant ministry partners. He also experienced a Sunday Night (vasarnapeste) and even hung out a wee bit at our favorite skate park.

(By the way, exciting things are happening ministry-wise. If you don't currently receive e'mail updates from us, ask and we'll put you on the list. We purposefully don't write about too many ministry things on this blog.)

Back to Jason . . . I just wanted to share these photos with you all, 'cause one of the reasons we were glad to see him was because of the extra suitcase! It was like Christmas morning, as you can see from the photos. So thanks, not only to Jason for coming, but to our church, Broadway, for sending him and filling his suitcase with Old Crown Coffee, Doritos, Veggie Tale videos, Oreos, letters, toys and many more signs of love and affection. Thanks!

Venting/Kiakadás

OK, I wrote this entry like a month ago but didn't have the time and the energy to translate it (by the way, someone asked if after I write an entry in one language the system somehow translates it into the other one? No, unfortunately it doesn't! :)

All right, here is my venting for today! It's kind of PG-13 but funny too, so hopefully it won't stumble anyone...

In Budapest and other big cities there are these free daily papers that you can pick up in the morning at underground stations and other public places. They're full of news bits and shorter articles on politics, culture, sports, etc. It is a lighter read than a typical daily paper in Europe, but I wouldn't call it a tabloid. Anyway, I was going to work the other day and picked one up at the train station. As I was going down the escalator (good thing I am a Budapest girl, so I survived the shock even without holding on :), I turned to the back cover to start reading (yes, I read papers from the back - don't you?) and there was a full-page ad for a clothing store. There, in one of the pictures (not a drawing, a real photo) was a man standing in front of a rack full of suits, browsing through the lovely outfits. So what's the big deal about this? Well, nothing, except that the man was NAKED!!!! I am not joking: I mean naked, i.e. he was not wearing any clothes!!! The picture was from the side, which made it a little better, BUT STILL!!! :)

I mean I don't want to sound prudish and I did grow up in Europe, but come on, tell me, who is the target audience of this ad? Women? We all know that they are wired quite differently than men in this respect and I doubt many quit work early that day and ran to the store to see if the man is still standing in front of the racks?! And men? Well, I sure hope that they weren't positively affected by the ad either.

So there you have it. The naked truth about how my day started. :)

A nőket?

A meztelen igazság arról, hogyan kezdődött a napom. :)

The boy in the striped pyjamas

This is the book I was writing about the other day. I got it from Matthew's mom (thanks, Carol! :) As I saw online, there is a film version of it, too. Thought you may be interested, so here is a summary I found:

"Bruno is a nine-year-old boy growing up in Berlin during World War II. He lives in a five-storey house with servants, his mother and father and 12-year-old sister, Gretel. His father wears a fancy uniform and they have just been visited by a very important personage called the Fury, a pun which adult readers should have no trouble deciphering. As a consequence of this visit, Bruno's father gets a new uniform, his title changes to Commandment and, to Bruno's chagrin, they find themselves moving to a new home at a place called Out-With.

When Bruno gets there he is immediately homesick. He has left his school, his three best friends, his house, his grandparents and the bustling street life of urban Berlin with its cafes, fruit and veg stalls, and Saturday jostle. His new home is smaller, full of soldiers and there is no one to play with. From his bedroom window, however, he notices a town of people dressed in striped pyjamas separated from him by a wire fence. When he asks his father who those people are, he responds that they aren't really people.

Bruno is forbidden to explore but boredom, isolation and sheer curiosity become too much for him. One day, he follows the wire fence cordoning off the area where these people live from his house. He spots a dot in the distance on the other side of the fence and as he gets closer, he sees it's a boy. Excited by the prospect of a friend, Bruno introduces himself. The Jewish boy's name is Shmuel. Almost every day, they meet at the same spot and talk. Eventually, for a variety of reasons, Bruno decides to climb under the fence and explore Shmuel's world."

*If you want to read the book or see the movie, don't read on, but I have to write about the ending, too. The day before Bruno, his sister and their mom are ready to move back to Berlin, as their dad figured this is not a place fit for children; Bruno and Shmuel (who is Polish, by the way) decide that B really should get to know S's world and help him find his Papa, who had disappeared a few days before. Neither of them has any idea of what happens to people who "disappear" in the camp, though S is aware of the soldiers' cruelty - yet he doesn't talk about these to B, whose father is the Chief Commander... Anyway, S gets B a set of striped pyjamas, he changes by the fence and gets in. They explore a little, looking for S's Papa. B is disappointed to find that there are no cafes and fruit stands in the camp, and people don't seem to be happy, even though they have lots of friends around, while he has none on the other side of the fence... After a while, B thinks he should go back to be home for dinner; however, just then, they are all lined up and the soldiers lead them in a march ... to a building to protect them from the rain, B thinks. They grab each other's hands when the doors are slammed shut and the lights are turned off...

After a few days of franctic search for Bruno, his dad finds the pile of clothes and the opening on the fence...

Classes are over at the university; halleluja, I can breathe again! :) I have things to do in the exam period as well, but it won't be this nonstop work like in the last few weeks, which was getting to be increasingly harder to bear. However, I - even with the big belly - still did better than some of my male colleagues (whose nationality I am not going to mention here), who have been responding with some juicy cussing to this stress. Oh well... It is nice to be able to rest a little. Last night, for instance, I read a very interesting book that had nothing to do with work - it was a wonderful feeling! :) Maybe I'll write some more about it...

Thanks for the comments about the last entry. It wasn't the language mistakes but more the silly argumentation that struck me. And by the way, it wasn't my student, as we did cross-rating with the other teachers. My students' essays were perfect! (OK, I'm just kidding... :))

I thought I would post a few pictures of the kids that were taken in the last few weeks. In fact, the first one is of a dog that we accidentally picked up from the pre-school.
This dog likes to climb trees a lot - maybe he is a monkey after all?

The next picture is of Benjamin getting ready for his nap in our bed (we put them down in separate rooms, because BG always sleeps, while Oliver only rests). Cute, isn't he?

The big news about him is that he will be a pre-schooler from the fall! :) We just saw the official list today: he got admitted to the Oliver's class! (All the classes are mixed ages). We would otherwise wait until he is 4, why rush, but this way they can be in the same class for a year, which they are both very excited about and which I think will make the bond closer between them (even though they have a very good relationship now). The other thing is that this way BG could get into this group as a "sibling", which we think is the best class in this great school, while a lot of kids were rejected because there is no space available for them...

Check this out...

I just finished one of my tasks: grading 55 exam papers in Academic Skills (i.e. First Year Writing at most US universities). I think this is kind of like God's sense of humor that the very last task in the very last paper was SO bad that I had to laugh when I read it. It's a one paragraph essay and I thought I would share it with you. Mind you, these students are English majors. Enjoy! :)

Unnecessary foreign languages

Teachers should not learn foreign languages. As it is commonly known, nowadays more and more people come to Hungary and then stay here for a very long period of time. As they learn our language, our teachers is not required to learn their language. On the other hand, teachers be able to understood themselves, if they are forced such a situation, because people can communicate each other with gestures and mimicks. Moreover, our official language is Hungarian, therefore teachers do not need to use any other foreign languages. There is one more reason why teachers should not learn foreign languages. If they do that and speak in an unknown language, their students will not understand what they say. To conclude, it is not necessary for teachers to learn a foreign language.

So, do you think we should pass this person?? :)

PLEASE NOTE: Though this blog should not be accessible through internet search machines and I didn't include any details, may I please ask you not to copy or circulate this piece of writing in any shape or form? If this leaks out, I am in trouble AND I will really have to make the access to our blog "password only to people we know and trust" in the future (And who knows whether you are in that category?? :)) Thank you.

Time out/Időkérés

Well, the end of semester has come again (meaning end of classes in two weeks, but then come the finals, which here means not one little week, but six weeks!) and that means BUSYNESS for me. I haven't dared to count the number of papers I need to mark, but for sure there are about 65 exam papers, plus I just received four MA theses I need to read and grade in 6 days. Not to mention the regular assignments that students hand in at the classes I teach (which really is my own fault, right? Why give so much homework?? :).

However, I don't mean to complain, because believe it or not, I actually enjoy my job very much - it's just the short deadlines and late nights I am not fond of.

Other than this, we are doing great. Pretty soon we are leaving for a church retreat where our pastor from Fort Wayne is teaching! It's great to have him here - another person that has crossed the border of our two worlds! :) It will be fun to translate his Bible studies as well.

All in all, you probably won't hear from us for a while (unless my dear husband posts something of course). Should you miss us, don't forget that apart from being a secret reader of our blog, like most of you I assume are, you can always e-mail or call us and actually let us know how YOU are doing.

See ya! :)

:) Izgi lesz a bibliaóráit is fordítani.
