Birthday season/Szülinapozunk!

This part of the year is exciting for us as we celebrate the birthdays of our kids! Benjamin is turning 2 tomorrow and Oliver will be 5 next Monday. Happy birthday, boys!!!! We are so thankful for you!!! :) We'll throw a party for both of them on Saturday and do something special on each of their birthdays (which they will choose).

Here are a couple of snapshots of the birthday boys in the shirts Grandma Carol made for them! :) Oliver is also showing off the toy cars Gma and Gpa sent them!

Hogyan szereljünk autót/How to fix a car

There are many topics in the world I don't have a clue about. Auto mechanics is one of them. That is why I admire people who look at a broken car, turn a screw here, fasten something there and lo and behold, the car is running as new!

The other day our friends came to our house and they told us they had had problems with the fan belt in their car (yes, I know what a fan belt is; I am not that bad! In Hungary you even have to pass an auto mechanics test to get your driver's license! :) So without a fan belt you can't even go to a store where you can get a new fan belt, right? In an attempt to fix this problem, our friend came up with a creative idea. What was that? Maybe you can figure it out by looking at the photo!
Na?
Well?

Yes, those readers were right who were yelling "nylons!" when they looked at the first picture. Maybe this is a well-known solution for you all, but I had a good laugh at this creative idea and thought I would share with you too. So the morale of the story is: besides the first-aid-kid and the flashlight, make sure you throw in a pair of nylons too! You never know when you may need it! Have a safe trip! :)

Retirement/Nyugdíj

My dad had a little party at work yesterday. No, it wasn't his birthday. He is retiring! Which means that as of September, all four of our parents will be retired! I think it was a relief for all of them to be able to rest after years of hard work. And I don't think they are bored! I have put together a Top 10 list of the things they occupy themselves with:

1. fishing
2. hunting
3. gardening
4. biking
5. swimming
6. canning masses of home-grown vegetables/fruits
7. being a judge at a local pet show
8. teaching at a university
9. teaching young people at church
10. and of course loving on their grandkids (when they are around, I know! :)

On a different note, I (Melinda) will be teaching from September! I am very excited about it but now after reading the list above, I am thinking that maybe I should retire instead! :)

5. úszás
6. kerti zöldségek/gyümölcsök tömeges befőzése
7. bíráskodás helyi kisállatversenyen
8. egyetemi tanítás
9. fiatalok tanítása a gyülekezetben
10. és végül, de nem utolsósorban az unokázás!!! :)

To sleep like a baby.../Így alszunk mi...

Does anyone know who invented the phrase "to sleep like a baby"? For sure he/she didn't have any children! As far as I know, babies typically don't "sleep like a baby", i.e. uninterrupted, motionless, noiseless for like 12 hours each day! However, many people would agree that kids are the cutest when they do sleep...no fussing, arguing, throwing tantrums then! :) In this post I just wanted to show you two interesting positions I've found our kids in recently. :)

:) Ebben a kis bejegyzésben szeretnék megosztani veletek két érdekes pozíciót, amiket gyerekeink mutattak be alvás közben. :)

No family strife!/Még együtt a család!

As you may know, Hungary won the men's water polo gold medal in the Olympics! They beat the USA 14-10. The Americans did a wonderful job in all their games, which surprised people as water polo is traditionally a (Central-Eastern) European sport. This was Hungary's third water polo gold in a row and ninth in total of the history of the modern Olympic Games! Thanks to those friends and family who followed the match just because they knew we were interested in it! :)

Although we are both pretty much bilingual and bi-cultural, I told Matthew at the beginning of the Beijing Games that I am a Hungarian during the Olympics! :) So he said he was quite happy that the Hungarians won and he got lunch after the match on Sunday!!! :)

Here is the news we have been waiting for:

"Attila Vajda won Hungary's first gold of the Games in the men's canoe 1,000 metre single on Friday and paid tribute to his friend and two-times Olympic champion Gyorgy Kolonics, who died in July while training for Beijing."

Yeah!!! :))

There was another emotional race for the Hungarians in canoe today where the deceased Kolonics's sports partner and friend, György Kozmann, raced in the canoe 1000m doubles finals, where they would have competed together. After the tragic death of his friend, he didn't even want to compete at the Olympics, but eventually started to train with a new partner. They had a month to prepare and won the bronze medal - which they dedicated to Kolonics. Needless to say, it was celebrated like a gold medal in this country! :)

The other great news is that the Hungarian men's water polo team got into the finals today! And we just learned not long ago that it will be a Hungary - USA game! Oh no!!! Marital strife in our family?? :) No, there won't be any, but a "gold game" like that will be interesting for us to watch for sure! :)

Here is how we are watching the Games in the hot summer (Benjamin is yelling "Go Hungarians!" :)

Nyílt levél/Open letter

Nyílt levél a Nemzetközi Olimpiai Bizottság tagjaihoz

Tisztelt Uraim!

Tisztelettel:

Egy olimpiakedvelő valahonnan Európából

Open letter to the members of the International Olympics Committee

Dear Sirs, ("and Madams"? I don't know! Are there women in there too? Anyway, I am digressing...)

I would like to request that the sports below be included in the program of the Olympic Games. I sincerely hope that after synchronized swimming, beach volleyball, windsurfing and BMX racing becoming part of the Games, you would show consideration to my request.

The new sports will be demonstrated by young athletes (our and our friends' children).

Yours faithfully,

A friend of the Games from somewhere in Europe

Íme a javasolt sportágak/Here are the proposed sports:

Szinkronugrálás/Synchronized jumping
Fáramászás/Tree climbing
Szinkron mászókázás/Synchronized jungle gym
És végül, de nem utolsósorban a macskakergetés!
And last, but not least at all, cat chasing!

Augusztus/August 20

Today was a national holiday in Hungary. We took a train up to Budapest to see some of the events. The kids really liked the adventure. Here are a few pictures:

Olivér élvezte a vonatozást/Oliver enjoying the train ride
Pihen a Lánchíd, autók letiltva ...
One of the main bridges (the Chain Bridge) was closed for foot traffic only
Benjámin nézelődik a háti hordozóban
Benjamin taking in the sights in his backpack carrier

Oliver was like a champ walking around and then running after the train back home. He summarized the adventure as follows: "It was a great day, but let's not go again because I got really tired!" and he collapsed for his nap...

Beijing/Peking 2008

Everything is going well here and we are starting to realize that summer is almost over! Are you following the Olympics? We are, mostly on the internet, as we don't subscribe to any TV channels. However, our friend helped us tune into the main Hungarian TV channel with what looks to me is the simplest little cable I have ever seen (this is completely legal, we just didn't know about it before). Anyway, I had thought that my next post would be about the first Hungarian gold medal, but that is yet to come! I hope we don't have to wait much longer! In Hungary, like any small country I assume, people love the Olympic Games and treat their champions like heroes (well, they are, aren't they?). Hungary usually does pretty well in the Games, but this time they are not doing as well as they were expected to.

The biggest sports fan and expert in our family is Péter, my brother. He is capable to get up at 3 or 4 am to follow the happenings of the Games. He can be watching an event on TV, wearing headphones and listening to a radio station broadcasting a different game and browsing sport news on the web all AT THE SAME TIME! Needless to say, the best way to approach him in these moments is using charades! (He does have a family and a job though and is not cranky about people "disturbing him", but he just cracks me up! :) So when I have any sports-related questions, I just ask him! :)

Amelia Grace

Happy birthday to one of our favorite nieces, Amelia Grace, who is one of our most faithful readers too!!! Here is a cute picture for you! :) We love you and miss you!
Uncle Matthew, Aunt Melinda and Cousins Oliver and Benjamin
(Boldog szülinapot egyik kedvenc unokahúgunknak, aki egyben egyik leghűségesebb olvasónk is! :)

Zucchini/Cukkini

Here is another gastroblog entry for you! :)
Imhol mégegy bejegyzés a főzésről! :)

One of our dear co-workers here has a huge garden and grows all sorts of fruits and vegetables. So on Saturday he brought along a basket full of zucchinis to a social gathering (thanks, Jóska! :). Matthew received two, and this is what one of them looked like (I gave the other one away):

Matt is kapott kettőt.
You can tell how big it was compared to the (average size) apple next to it. Or maybe it was just the biggest zucchini we have seen, as I just read that the world's biggest zucchini measured 69.5 inches - taller than most of us! I have a hard time believing that and if it is indeed true, I am sure it was injected with hormones and was tasteless! :)

So what does one do with such a huge vegetable? Well, cutting it up, breading and frying it would have taken hours, so I opted for a different solution, thanks to the idea of the great gardener's wife, Sandi. I cut it in two, carved the seeds out, stuffed it with curry turkey and rice, poured some olive oil on it and off it went into the oven! When it was done I sprinkled a generous amount of cheese on it, which - in my opinion - makes any kind of meal better! :)

This is what it looked like. I was going to bake it nicely in one piece, but it simply didn't fit into my dish! Well, all who tasted it liked it anyway. :)

Motor

I am happy to report that our sick child is doing better. We can only hope the end is in sight, though he has been better before only to turn for the worse again...Anyway, here he is in a happy moment:

Did you catch what his shirt says? Here is a close-up! Heehee! :)

Hihi! :)
The video brought back memories of another child, who was riding around on the same motorbike almost three years ago:

Eddig tiszta sor. Hősnőnk (én!) a gyógyszer mellé almalével kínálja csemetéjét, aki boldogan lenyomja a nedűt. Siker!

Pár nap elteltével azonban csökken a lelkesedés. Tudom, furcsa!

Kanál közelít a gyermekhez.

:)

Tricks, or how to make your two-year-old take his medicine

I have to tell you in advance that unfortunately I don’t know the answer to the question above. Sorry to talk about Benjamin’s sickness again, but it has affected our past weeks quite a bit. In order to get better, our doctor suggested some remedies, which of course need to be taken. No big deal. Our heroine (me!) offers the little darling some apple juice with the medicine, and he drinks it heartily. Success!

However, after a few days, the enthusiasm starts to fade. This apple juice is not as tasty as it used to be...We need a new trick! Hope this won’t stumble you, but here Mother remembers her late beloved dog, Artúr, who always took pills if they were embedded in cheese. (Yes, cheese was his favorite food! I know it’s strange! :) This way the canine friend consumed any kind of bitter medicine. Unlike the child in our story, who gets his medicine mashed into a piece of banana – he spots the enemy right away!

Scene three. The heroine is browsing through the kitchen cabinet when she has a great idea! Chocolate syrup!!! No child could resist that! Let’s get out the meat hammer, crush up the pill, sprinkle it on a spoon (half of it misses it, but the smart mom knowingly started with a double portion), pour on the syrup. Spoon approaches child. Crying! No problem, he just doesn’t know what’s on it, he is rarely fed chocolate syrup by itself! He tastes it. More crying! Despair.

No happy ending. Curtain.

Postscript: I am not fond of medications. These are natural, over-the-counter remedies. And I have also heard that there are a lot of medical problems that drugs solve quickly in 7 days, whereas without them it may take a whole week...Unfortunately we are over this time frame. Dear practicing moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, aunts and uncles! I am open for ideas! :)

Mexican dinner/Mexikói vacsora

Warning: If you are hungry and there is no food nearby, you may not want to read this post right now! OK, I warned you! :)

Monday was my birthday. Yes, we celebrated my 20th...uhm...the anniversary of my 20th birthday, that is! :) My dear husband invited me out for dinner, but because of Benjamin's sickness, we couldn't go out. No problem, Matthew whipped up an extraordinary Mexican dinner for us! (Mind you, this is all the more special because there isn't a Mexican restaurant on every street corner "over here"). Of course I documented the menu with pictures - here you go! :)

Hétfőn volt a születésnapom. Igen, a huszadik szülinapom ...öhm ... Természetesen képekkel dokumentáltam a menüt - íme! :)

Corn chips and fresh, home-made salsa (one of my favorites)
Kukorica chips és házi készítésű friss salsa (egyik kedvenc kajám)
Salad/Saláta
Chicken buritos, refried beans and corn on the cob (another favorite of mine)
Csirke burito, babpüré és főtt kukorica (másik kedvencem)
And for dessert, ice-cream with Oreos (thanks to Deanne's birthday package! :)
Not bad, eh? Come over; we have some leftovers! While supplies last! :)
Nem rossz, ugye? Gyertek át, még van egy kis maradék! Amíg a készlet tart! :)

What to do when you have a contageous virus and can't go anywhere where you might possibly be in contact with other human beings, especially children

Yes, I vaguely remember learning at the university that essay titles shouldn't be too long, but I don't think I was paying attention at that class... So what to do? I don't know, but these are the activities I captured on camera last week.

We can read
Olvashatunk

We can jump from the couch to the mattress
Ugrálhatunk a kanapéról a matracra
We can help Mama doing housework
Segíthetünk Mamának a házimunkában
We can watch a story about Thomas the Tank Engine (sometimes with closed eyes :)
Nézhetünk mesét Thomas Mozdonyról (néha csukott szemmel :)
By the way, we are all better now, except for Benjamin, who is not well yet (I hope you appreciate my diplomatic way of expressing this; I'll spare you of the details :)

Egyébként most már mindannyian jól vagyunk, kivéve Benjámint, aki még mindig nincs jól (remélem, értékelitek a diplomatikus fogalmazást, a részletektől inkább megkímélem a gyengébb idegzetű olvasókat :)
