They looked so sweet together on our bed, the boys telling stories to Miriam...
Oliver's story was about a dog and a rabbit (demonstrated by a stuffed dog and rabbit). "The dog got the rabbit and tore it up ... then the dog attacked a man and ate his flesh ... then the skeleton of the man beat up the dog."
What???
WHY are they telling their sweet little sister stories like THESE??
We don't watch TV at all.
The DVDs they watch are very child-like and innocent (Bob the Builder, Veggie Tales). I am VERY picky regarding this.
They are not exposed to any violence in books, on the internet, or in the family.
The most aggressive toys they have are wooden swords and knights on horses.
Don't get me wrong, we are not raising them in a bubble.
They go to pre-school, we take them to the playground, where they meet all sorts of kids and families.
We take them when we minister to kids in the park and there they DO meet all sorts of people.
We live in the city and boy, are there some weird people we run into!
And yes, we do tell them Bible stories, which are often not lovey-dovey! :)
BUT we monitor who and what they see and what sort of people we let into our house.
So what is the reason??
As I learned a few years ago, the saying "boys will be boys" is indeed very true! You want your boys to grow up without violence? You don't buy them guns so they are not prompted to fight? Well, too bad! They will pick up a stick (or a pen or a banana) and fight with that! The other day Oliver's left and right hand "had a fight"! :) Therefore, it is not our goal to suppress the natural aggression God put in them. That is there for a reason. When they (playfully) fight, wrestle, tell stories like the ones above, have sword fights or talk about how they would protect their sister from the dragon, we don't stop them or tell them off... just smile and pray.
May the Lord help us channel their strength, aggression, and energy well and may He use them for His glory.
And in a few years we will see how the story is different (if at all) with little girls...
MIÉRT mesélnek a cuki kis hugicájuknak ILYEN történeteket??

I love this post. So glad you have time to "star at the wall" -- oh yeah, I'm sure!!! Vivian looks like she is really enjoying her brothers and their stories.
uggh, -- stare -- well you know what I mean
Oh my! We have the SAME thing in our house. No tv and we are very particular about books and dvds. And yet EVERYTHING becomes a sling, sword or whip in his hand.
I guess the Bible is not the most nonviolent book in the world and we try not to censor it much for him. All that slaying of giants and lions and bears just seems to stick!

I remember well, when my brother Ben was just a little over a year, picked a spatula out of the dishwasher, walked out on the front porch and started "shooting" cars as they went by with the spatula. Now, if you'll remember he is the long awaited for boy after 6 sisters in a row and barely able to speak! =0
